“Remix” exhibition at the Hôtel des arts Toulon

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Hôtel des Arts in Toulon, France, where the “Remix” exhibition was on display.

“Remix” is an exhibition that invites you to explore the intersection of history, art, and reinvention. Showcasing former furniture pieces from the Mobilier National—a prestigious French statutory corporation that administers the Gobelins Manufactory and Beauvais Manufactory, and which is responsible for furnishing the official buildings of the Republic—this exhibition brings to life objects once deemed obsolete. These pieces, labeled as “alienated” due to their loss of historical or artistic value, were excluded from national collections and eventually put up for sale. Yet, they failed to attract buyers.

Instead of letting these objects fade into obscurity, a group of talented designers and artists were invited to step in and work their magic. They took these discarded pieces and gave them a fresh start—some found new functions, others were transformed into striking decorative items, and a few were completely reinvented, shedding their original purpose altogether.

This exhibition is part of a broader, eco-conscious movement that champions contemporary design while questioning the very nature of objects. By remixing these pieces, we are invited to reconsider their status and explore the intriguing possibility that this artistic process might itself be a form of recycling. It challenges our perceptions, urging us to see the potential for renewal in the most unexpected places.

Here are a few snapshots of the exhibition to contemplate and reflect upon.
